PC bait and switch on climate change punishes Ontario taxpayers to pay off polluters..

November 30, 2018

The premier’s climate-change strategy is certainly a change in direction: It scales back Ontario’s obligation to curb carbon pollution by more than 25 per cent — 30 megatonnes — at the very time reductions are most needed.

But it also reverses the onus: Rather than imposing a price on carbon pollution as a cost of doing business, the Tories are shifting the burden to taxpayers by making them subsidize big business.

Canada’s Saudi weapons sales a moral race to the bottom..

November 30, 2018

That sickening conundrum pretty much sums up the current status of the Canadian weapons industry and, specifically, London, Ontario’s General Dynamics Land Systems plant, which is providing $15 billion in killer weapons to the Saudi regime to repress women at home and mercilessly slaughter civilians in neighbouring Yemen. The company is seen as a good corporate citizen for donating to local charities and for helping hundreds keep food on the table. And besides, it’s Ottawa that made the call to proceed with the weapons deal.

Ford has delivered a slap in the face to Ontario’s francophones..

November 21, 2018

By abolishing the office that looks out for the interests of Ontario’s French-speaking population, the Ford government hasn’t just delivered a slap in the face to the province’s more than 600,000 francophones.

On top of that insult, the government has tarnished the image of Ontario among French-speakers right across Canada. It has fed the fears of those who believe this country isn’t really committed to protecting the “other” official language, and has undermined national unity.

Extinction Rebellion for climate justice is organizing in Canada, too..

November 21, 2018

This past Saturday, November 17, an estimated 6,000 Extinction Rebellion activists occupied five bridges — Lambeth, Westminster, Blackfriars, Southwark, and Waterloo — in central London, U.K. to demand action against climate breakdown.

At least 85 people were arrested, most charged with obstruction under the Highways Act which carries with it a possible fine of up to £1,000 (about C$1,688).

Not surprisingly, London’s Metropolitan Police were not impressed and told the Daily Express, “Given that the organizers failed to engage with police prior to the event, we were unable to work with them around their plan and to make considerations for other Londoners.”

Events are being planned in cities around the globe, including in Canada.
