‘The virus ‘threatening’ Canada starts with a D, not a C’..

February 29, 2020

A dangerous virus spreading across the land known as Canada is generating fear amongst corporate executives and government representatives. Contrary to expectation, however, the threat keeping them up at night is not coronavirus.

Rather, it is a growing contagion for which the ruling elites and their parliamentary stooges have always had nothing but contempt: it’s known as democracy.

The state of the art of Conservative victimhood in Alberta..

February 25, 2020

Michelle Rempel Garner, the Blocker Queen of Twitter and Conservative MP for the monochromatic suburban wasteland of Calgary Nose Hill, apparently wants us to think she is the Pierre Vallières of Wild Rose Country with a formula to make us Albertans not only maîtres chez nous, but masters of your house too!

Best known hitherto for her unrepentant inclination to block any citizen who complains about anything she says on social media, Rempel Garner has even earned her own hashtag: #BlockedByRempel. Nevertheless, she is the most prominent of the four Conservative Alberta MPs who signed the so-called Buffalo Declaration that’s been getting so much undeserved attention from our credulous local journos.

Doug Ford’s attacks on labour are an attack on public health..

February 25, 2020

Here in Ontario, the Doug Ford government  moved swiftly once in office to proclaim the province “open for business” by dismantling workers’ paid sick leave protections and reintroducing sick notes in January 2019. Those protections had only been in effect for a year, implemented by the previous Liberal government after decades of grassroots activism. Ford repealed the measures within months of taking office.

Are the federal Conservatives a national government in waiting or a separatist bloc? Andrew Scheer must decide..

February 25, 2020

This is relevant today, of course, in light of the so-called “Buffalo Declaration,” the much-publicized 6,000-word screed published by four Conservative MPs from Alberta that essentially tells Canada: Do what we want or Alberta will separate from Confederation and found an independent state, maybe with Saskatchewan along for the ride.

In other words, the Buffalo Declaration is essentially the position supposedly advocated by the Bloc for Quebec, at least as understood on the Prairies.

Ontario police arrest First Nations protesters amid standoff with Canadian government over pipeline..

February 25, 2020
Police in Ontario arrested 10 people and dismantled the Tyendinaga Mohawk blockade that had shut down much of Canada’s rail traffic for the past two weeks, but the battle over a pipeline going through indigenous lands continues.

Mohawks set up barricades on the Canadian Pacific railway track on February 8, in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs over in British Columbia, who are protesting efforts to build a natural gas pipeline through the land they claim. They demand that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau order the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) out of their territory before any negotiations can begin.

Wet’suwet’en solidarity blockades: corporate media’s punditocracy is yesterday’s news..

February 23, 2020

Once again, the corporate media are putting a pro-extractivist spin on the news. A recent poll conducted for Global News shows that 61 per cent of Canadians oppose the blockades in support of the Wet’suwet’en resistance to the Coastal GasLink pipeline in northern B.C. As the mainstream media constantly remind us, these solidarity blockades have led to disruptions of rail traffic across the country, with associated economic costs. On its website, Global News headlined its poll, “61% of Canadians Oppose Wet’suwet’en Solidarity Blockades; 75% Back Action to Help Indigenous People.”

That emphasis obscures the astonishing finding that 39 per cent of Canadians support the blockades, notwithstanding the outrage from media, political and business quarters.

‘Doug Ford’s Tories treated your licence plates like political vanity plates. Until a cop caught them out’..

February 21, 2020

Within months of winning the 2018 election, Ford decided to turn his pedestrian campaign slogan — “Open for Business” — into a provincial credo. Henceforth, decreed the premier, his favourite phrase would be plastered on all new licence plates for commercial vehicles in Ontario.

Protests by Indigenous peoples a culmination of centuries of political abuse and neglect..

February 21, 2020

A recent poll found that a majority of Canadians favour police intervention to stop Indigenous protesters and activists from blocking railway services.

Are these anti-protesters unaware of the long and brutal mistreatment of Indigenous peoples that led up to these protests? Or do they simply not care about it?

In any case, perhaps a brief history lesson may be helpful, starting after the initial invasion of Canada by European settlers.
