Canada could make a fortune from legalized pot

December 4, 2017
Canada is a step away from becoming the first G7 country to legalize recreational marijuana with weed retailers getting ready to make billions of dollars.

The Cannabis Act was introduced in the Canadian Senate last week. The bill is overwhelmingly backed by the general public and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and is expected to pass by July 2018 or earlier.

Newspapers march further down their road to oblivion

December 4, 2017

When the history of Canadian newspapers (or, more likely, their obituary) is written, this may go down as the week we heard the first death rattles.

It started with the largest mass closure of newspapers in Canada’s history. Staff at 11 Ontario community newspapers and two free dailies in Toronto and Vancouver arrived for work Monday morning to find the doors locked. Their jobs were gone just like that. It was part of a swap of 41 newspapers by Canada’s two largest publishers. Thirty-six of them will be closed forever.

Justin Trudeau’s government continues to discriminate against transgender people. His apology means nothing

December 2, 2017

Although we acknowledge the recent trans legal gains to which the liberal government has contributed, we also denounce the lack of efforts to solve urgent issues that continue to affect the most precarious and stigmatised members of our community

Global corporations have become the greatest threat to the planet

December 1, 2017
The revelations of the Paradise Papers and the earlier Panama Papers demonstrate just one dimension, tax evasion, of an obvious truth: corporations have become the greatest threat to the planet.

Oppose Trudeau and Trump, the Canada-US alliance, and imperialist war!

December 1, 2017

The true character of the Trudeau government as a government of imperialist reaction is exemplified by its foreign-defence policy and drive to deepen Canada’s economic and military-strategic partnership with Washington under the Trump administration, the most right-wing in modern American history.

Government for the people, not fossil fuel corporations

November 2, 2017

I consider voting a privilege and a responsibility. But I wish politicians would take their responsibility to voters more seriously. We elect them to represent us. Sometimes our interests coincide with corporate priorities. After all, corporations create jobs and economic opportunities and often develop products and services citizens need. Corporations can’t vote, but by putting enormous amounts of money into campaigns and lobbying, they can hijack the political agenda.

Revealed: oil giants pay billions less tax in Canada than abroad

October 27, 2017

Canada taxes its oil and gas companies at a fraction of the rate they are taxed abroad, including by countries ranked among the world’s most corrupt, according to an analysis of public data by the Guardian.

The low rate that oil companies pay in Canada represents billions of dollars in potential revenue lost, which an industry expert who looked at the data says is a worrying sign that the country may be “a kind of tax haven for our own companies.”

“Love and courage”—Canada’s NDP elects Obama-style pitchman as leader

October 7, 2017

Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) elected Jagmeet Singh as its new leader on the first ballot of its leadership vote last Sunday. His victory represents a further shift to the right by Canada’s social democrats and underscores that this big business party long ago abandoned any connection with the working class or even the fight for significant social reform.
