Pandemic a bad time to be a right-wing premier..

December 11, 2020

It’s not easy being a right-wing conservative premier in COVID times. The trap they’re caught in is that a global pandemic isn’t the best circumstance for invoking libertarian individualism and the all-purpose value of the private sector, then standing aside. Active government has its problems, but someone has to do something right now, not just wait for the invisible hand to generate profitable solutions. Luckily there are enough of them to let us compare responses.

How Alberta capitulated to Big Oil and left Albertans poorer..

July 30, 2020

In the coming battle to shape Canada’s post-pandemic economy, right-wing forces will likely be led by Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, the closest thing we have to Donald Trump.

So it’s worth examining the fiercely pro-corporate economic model endorsed by Kenney — a self-styled populist who specializes in stirring up resentment and division — and see why we should go to great lengths to avoid it in the future.

‘A Shameful New Low’: Amid COVID-19 Crisis, Alberta Govt. Ponies Up $1 Billion for Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline..

April 1, 2020

“We need billions of public dollars invested directly in vulnerable communities dying from COVID-19, not spent propping up massive oil companies and unneeded projects that would trample Indigenous rights and exacerbate the climate crisis.”

The state of the art of Conservative victimhood in Alberta..

February 25, 2020

Michelle Rempel Garner, the Blocker Queen of Twitter and Conservative MP for the monochromatic suburban wasteland of Calgary Nose Hill, apparently wants us to think she is the Pierre Vallières of Wild Rose Country with a formula to make us Albertans not only maîtres chez nous, but masters of your house too!

Best known hitherto for her unrepentant inclination to block any citizen who complains about anything she says on social media, Rempel Garner has even earned her own hashtag: #BlockedByRempel. Nevertheless, she is the most prominent of the four Conservative Alberta MPs who signed the so-called Buffalo Declaration that’s been getting so much undeserved attention from our credulous local journos.

Are the federal Conservatives a national government in waiting or a separatist bloc? Andrew Scheer must decide..

February 25, 2020

This is relevant today, of course, in light of the so-called “Buffalo Declaration,” the much-publicized 6,000-word screed published by four Conservative MPs from Alberta that essentially tells Canada: Do what we want or Alberta will separate from Confederation and found an independent state, maybe with Saskatchewan along for the ride.

In other words, the Buffalo Declaration is essentially the position supposedly advocated by the Bloc for Quebec, at least as understood on the Prairies.

Alberta’s ‘war room’ is an attack on democracy..

February 11, 2020

.. happening in Alberta… The government’s scandal-plagued $2.5-million public inquiry and $30-million-a-year “war room,” called the Canadian Energy Centre, are founded on a conspiracy theory and are designed to silence or stigmatize those who raise legitimate questions about an expanding fossil fuel industry during a climate crisis. The war room is also set up as a corporation so it’s not subject to freedom of information requests — not a transparent use of tax dollars.

Trans Mountain ruling looks like a win for Alberta — as the world drives away in electric vehicles..

February 5, 2020

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney won one yesterday with the decision of the Federal Court of Appeal to strike down a challenge by a group of four British Columbia First Nations and allow the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project to take another lurching step toward completion.

Jason Kenney’s economic policies are failing Alberta..

January 16, 2020

Good Lord, can Alberta survive another spring of renewal like the last one?

Another springtime of renewal — that’s what Government House Leader Jason Nixon and the United Conservative Party’s meme machine were promising yesterday with the announcement the Alberta Legislature will get back to business on February 25.

“At only 12% of the way though our mandate, we’ve delivered on 43% of our commitments to Albertans so far,” Premier Jason Kenney or one of his social media surrogates tweeted merrily with a huckster’s love of spurious statistics. “Looking forward to another spring of renewal.”
