Here in Ontario, the Doug Ford government  moved swiftly once in office to proclaim the province “open for business” by dismantling workers’ paid sick leave protections and reintroducing sick notes in January 2019. Those protections had only been in effect for a year, implemented by the previous Liberal government after decades of grassroots activism. Ford repealed the measures within months of taking office.

Within months of winning the 2018 election, Ford decided to turn his pedestrian campaign slogan — “Open for Business” — into a provincial credo. Henceforth, decreed the premier, his favourite phrase would be plastered on all new licence plates for commercial vehicles in Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticized Democrats during a visit to Washington, D.C., this week, calling Democratic presidential contender Sen. Bernie Sanders‘s (I-Vt.) campaign “scary.”

“We hope the election is going to turn out the right way … literally, the right way,” Ford said during an interview at a Canadian American Business Council event on Friday.

Doug Ford’s education cuts are killing our future..

Jonathan LeFresne has been teaching for seven years. After four years of short- and long-term occasional work, LeFresne got a full-time contract in the 2018-2019 school year with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). In spring 2019, Doug Ford’s government announced it was increasing class sizes, and LeFresne was declared surplus to the school, and later, the board. Despite assurances the TDSB would find a placement for him over the summer, on August 31 LeFresne was laid off.

Doug Ford voices support for plan to let developers hire their own inspectors..

January 28, 2020

Premier Doug Ford is voicing his support for a plan that could allow developers to hire their own building inspectors.

CBC Toronto was first to report on the government’s idea of creating a Certified Professionals Program that would allow architects and engineers to undergo additional training in the work that city inspectors do.

Under the plan, developers could then hire the newly-minted professionals, instead of calling in city inspectors to approve their progress. The City of Toronto is already voicing opposition, saying that raises a number of concerns including possible conflicts of interest.

Ford’s destructive cuts will have sweeping effects on health care..

November 21, 2019

It warms the soul to recall the day last June when Doug Ford was heartily booed by the enormous crowd in Nathan Phillips Square celebrating the Raptors — a crowd so big that it even dwarfed the one at Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Humiliated by this stunning rebuke, the premier retreated from some of his more unpopular cutbacks.

But it would be a mistake to assume that Ford’s destructive austerity agenda has been derailed. On the contrary, it moves forward like a freight train, coming at us slowly but relentlessly, much of it under cover of darkness.

October 10, 2019

Earlier this year, the Conservatives held a 10-point lead over the Liberals in Ontario – but that has now become a 10-point deficit, driven largely by Ford’s unpopularity, said Frank Graves, head of polling firm Ekos Research. “That’s an enormous transfer of seats from one side of the ledger to the other,” he said.

‘We’re in it for all of you,’ Scheer tells Etobicoke crowd — with no Doug Ford in sight..

September 18, 2019

It was a campaign pit stop in the heart of Ford Nation, just a 10-minute walk from the Etobicoke home of Ontario’s premier.

But there was no Doug Ford at federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s speech to Etobicoke Centre supporters Wednesday night.

Nor was there any mention of him — even if the spirit of Scheer’s brief address echoed his provincial counterpart’s promises to back “the little guy.”..

Poll suggests two thirds of Ontarians do not believe Doug Ford cares about people like them…

July 17, 2019

Premier Doug Ford bills himself and his government as “for the people,” but a new poll suggests a clear majority of Ontarians do not believe he cares about people like them.

The Corbett Communications survey for the Star indicates the cronyism scandal engulfing Ford’s office appears to be damaging the premier’s carefully constructed image as a champion for the little guy.

Asked whether “Doug Ford cares about people like me,” 67 per cent of respondents disagreed with that statement.
