Doug Ford’s attacks on labour are an attack on public health..

February 25, 2020

Here in Ontario, the Doug Ford government  moved swiftly once in office to proclaim the province “open for business” by dismantling workers’ paid sick leave protections and reintroducing sick notes in January 2019. Those protections had only been in effect for a year, implemented by the previous Liberal government after decades of grassroots activism. Ford repealed the measures within months of taking office.

Fears grow of more private health-care under Doug Ford..

September 28, 2018

Is Premier Doug Ford about to open the door wide for more and more private health care in Ontario?

That’s the fear among public health-care supporters who see growing signs that Ford will allow more for-profit health-care facilities in Ontario as part of his drive to slash government spending.

Pharmacare the first casualty of Doug Ford’s hasty hidden agenda..

July 5, 2018

On the campaign trail, Ford spoke often about his plans to cut billions in government waste because “the party with taxpayers’ dollars was over.” But he vowed to protect health-care spending, and young people had every reason to believe that a program supplying essential prescription medicines would survive Ford’s axe.

In fact, all major parties supported pharmacare in principle when it was first introduced last year. But OHIP+ is now part of the premier’s “shock and awe” campaign to show that the Tories know how to save money.

Hard times for health care under Ford..

June 3, 2018

Ford is totally naive when it comes to health care. What else would explain his pledge to improve the system while simultaneously vowing to slash 4 per cent out of every departmental budget? For the health ministry, which is the largest item in the provincial budget at $61 billion annually, that’s about $2.4 billion a year. Such a massive cut would totally destabilize the entire health-care system.

Increased cuts push Canadian health care toward privatization

December 23, 2016

We live in a society that’s riddled with elitism and special privilege. One of the few holdouts is medicare, Canada’s public health-care system, where a billionaire can’t bypass a fast-food worker waiting for medical care. Access is determined by medical need, not wallet size.

What’s ultimately at stake is whether there will be sufficient public funding to prevent provinces from turning over more of our health-care system to the private sector.
