Canada’s Conservatives: Republicans or Tories?..

October 29, 2019

In the 2019 election, the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) failed to meet partisan expectations. It was supposed to dislodge a vulnerable Liberal government falling in popularity in the months prior to the October 21 election.

A “blame the leader for the defeat” movement has emerged in the CPC, even though the party won 23 more seats with Andrew Scheer in 2019 (122) than behind Stephen Harper in 2015 (99).

Scheer ran a campaign aimed at getting core CPC voters out to vote by demonizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Instead of wooing first-time voters concerned about climate change, the CPC anti-carbon tax rhetoric drove them to vote for other parties.

Team Scheer forgot that electoral politics is about addition, not subtraction; about reaching out to people, not reducing potential support.

Election has left Conservatives in a bad place..

October 25, 2019

In the cold light of morning and with the dust settling on the federal election results, it is becoming clearer that the vote has landed Justin Trudeau’s Liberals in a much better place than it did their Conservative rivals.

Short of winning the majority he coveted, the Liberal leader has been handed as workable a hung Parliament as he could ever have hoped for.

Canada: why Doug Ford is kryptonite for Conservatives’ election hopes..

October 10, 2019

Earlier this year, the Conservatives held a 10-point lead over the Liberals in Ontario – but that has now become a 10-point deficit, driven largely by Ford’s unpopularity, said Frank Graves, head of polling firm Ekos Research. “That’s an enormous transfer of seats from one side of the ledger to the other,” he said.

Andrew Scheer Was Asked To Name One Policy That Shows He Supports Women’s Rights. He Couldn’t Name Any…

October 10, 2019

After claiming he had hit a “home run” following this week’s French leaders’ debate, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer swung and missed when a reporter tossed a softball question his way.

Scheer, who was repeatedly grilled over his positions on abortion during the French debate, spent most of the day Thursday fielding questions from reporters about his positions on abortion.

One generous reporter decided to cut Scheer some slack and ask an easy question:  “Can you point to a single policy in your platform that you believe shows that you do support women’s rights?”

The Andrew Scheer factor in election 2019..

October 8, 2019

In the first weeks of the 2019 election, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer received an unexpected gift: images, then a video, showing a younger Justin Trudeau wearing blackface makeup, which as Trudeau explained on the Radio-Canada Sunday night talk show Tout le monde en parlecaused grief and sorrow among supporters he spoke to — leading to apologies that could not erase the hurt and disappointment the Trudeau actions had caused.

With Prime Minister Trudeau personally weakened in visible minority communities where his party has historically dominated, the election campaign had turned into an opportunity for other political leaders.

Fortunately for the Liberals, the Conservative Party had given them an unexpected gift as well — a big one: Andrew Scheer as leader.

Andrew Scheer lacks ambition when it comes to twisting the truth..

October 5, 2019

..who knew that Bland Andy — by which I mean Andrew Scheer, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and aspirant for the prime ministership of our boreal dominion — would turn out to have a trunkful of dirty little secrets, with the emphasis on little?

Why Andrew Scheer would be a dangerous prime minister..

October 1, 2019

As much as I am revolted by what Trudeau did with his blackface nonsense, I’m more concerned at the Conservatives’ whiteface antics. That party’s approach to climate change policy, First Nations issues, economic justice, foreign affairs, social equality, and so much else is deeply disquieting.

‘We’re in it for all of you,’ Scheer tells Etobicoke crowd — with no Doug Ford in sight..

September 18, 2019

It was a campaign pit stop in the heart of Ford Nation, just a 10-minute walk from the Etobicoke home of Ontario’s premier.

But there was no Doug Ford at federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s speech to Etobicoke Centre supporters Wednesday night.

Nor was there any mention of him — even if the spirit of Scheer’s brief address echoed his provincial counterpart’s promises to back “the little guy.”..

September 16, 2019

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer claims his campaign promise of tax giveaways are “targeted specifically at taxpayers in the lowest-income tax bracket.”

But it seems economists disagree.
